As communities of interest within the Society of American Foresters and the forestry profession, Working Groups are the fundamental unit of SAF's Science and Technology Program.

The Science and Technology Program is administered by a seven member Forest Science and Technology Board. This Board is composed of one elected representative from each of the six Subject Areas, and is led by the Board Chair who is appointed by the SAF President. A collection of Working Groups having similar interests becomes a Subject Area.

One of SAF's missions is to "advance the science, education, technology, and practice of forestry." This is accomplished through the Society's 28 Working Groups that are an integral part of SAF's science program.

Working Groups operate primarily at national and regional levels. Their function is to: develop programs to communicate and enhance forest science and specific professional interests through the planning of technical sessions at SAF conventions and conferences; prepare and/or review technical reports and positions; and to participate in a variety of special projects.

As a Working Group member you:

• have access to WG-news designed to keep you informed of the latest news and information specific to your subject area
• gain the opportunity to participate in conferences or seminars with sessions specifically related to Working Group disciplines
• become directly involved in forest science issues and activities within the profession

Through your participation in Working Group activities, you enable SAF to:

• more fully address member interests on issues associated with the broad diversity of forest sciences
• develop the capacity to address science and technology issues at local and regional levels
• maintain a pool of specialists whose expertise may be used to develop credible and effective position and policy statements
