News: Thursday, January 15, 2009 U.S. Department of Transportation Signs Agreement with Washington State to Improve Efficiency Along the Border WASHINGTON - Freight carriers traveling in and out of Canada will expeience less frustration from congestion and will be better able to deliver goods where and when the market demands, thanks to an agreement with Washington state that will provide more accurate and reliable travel information on border wait times, U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary E. [read the full release] Wednesday, January 14, 2009 USDOT Signs 'Record of Decision' for Detroit River International Crossing WASHINGTON - Plans to build a second border crossing between Michigan and Ontario have received the necessary environmental approvals from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The "record of decision" (ROD), signed today by U.S. officials, represents the Detroit River International Crossing's (DRIC) final environmental clearance and allows Michigan to begin right-of-way acquisition and construction planning for the bridge. The Office of Operations launched a new Tolling and Pricing Program Web site. In an effort to create a more user friendly experience when searching for information about federal pricing programs, the new site includes valuable information that was once included on three separate sites: the Tolling and Pricing Opportunities, the Value Pricing Pilot Program (VPPP) and the VPPP site on the Knowledge Exchange. This is just the first step in streamlining information on one of the critical FHWA programs. In the future, the site will also feature a subject index that will help the user find the subjects they are looking for quickly instead of searching the entire site. SAFETEA-LU

Meeting Environmental Requirements After a Bridge Collapse
Two months after the August 1, 2007 collapse of Minnesota's Interstate 35 West (I-35W) Bridge, Minnesota's Department of Transportation (MnDOT) entered into a contract for a new bridge design and construction. The startling speed of the environmental review process and contract decision demonstrated that, in emergencies, the timeframe can be reduced dramatically, from several years to several months, without compromising environmental standards or safety. MnDOT held the reconstruction project to the same standards required for any transportation project of similar scope and scale. Find out more in the January issue of "Successes in Stewardship".
