UNITY: Helping the Homeless
http://www.unitygno.org/
The number of homeless people in New Orleans has doubled since Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005. UNITY of Greater New Orleans is a network of agencies that helps to prevent, reduce, and end homelessness.
Their case managers help homeless residents get off the street by placing them in temporary housing or hotels and eventually into permanent housing. Currently, UNITY is in the final stages of helping people move from underneath the Claiborne Bridge and into permanent housing.
Below is a list of ways in which you can help UNITY's efforts in helping to get our homeless residents off the streets and back on their feet. RESOURCES NEEDED 1. Furniture Items: UNITY has a warehouse in the uptown area, where donated items are accepted and then distributed clients. The items that UNITY is most in need of include tables, chairs, dressers, small shelving units, tvs, radios, microwaves, fans, and unused mattresses. If you have unused furniture or if you come across furniture at a flea market, please consider donating it to UNITY. We also appreciate donations of new furniture from stores nearby our warehouse such as Wal Mart, or a monetary donation towards the purchase of furniture. 2. Feeding at Hotels: While UNITY does route homeless residents to soup kitchens and food pantries, they also try and provide hot meals for them where they're staying. You can help by purchasing food items such as pizzas or sandwiches to distribute in coordination with UNITY. 3. Monetary contributions: UNITY is a nonprofit organization and welcomes your tax-deductible donation. Call UNITY for more information at 504-821-4496 or go to http://www.unitygno.org/ more
