1,4

Modified cattle use and continuing to refine grazing strategy to meet rangeland standards. May require more adjustments and possibly fencing portions of the riparian corridor.

Some bank stabilization and increase in riparian plants. Willows are being maintained and young plants observed. Wildfires have been less frequent and rest from livestock is provided if large enough and deemed necessary. Many areas on the mountain are extremely rocky and remote with little or no cattle use.

Refine actions already listed. Investigate and design fencing as required.

This is a small lease with a common problem. Although increasing oak regeneration would be desirable, it is a low priority relative to other uses of BLM resources within the Folsom FO.

N/A

Fencing or planting would likely increase regeneration, if resources become available.

Change of season of use. Movement of salt locations. Lessees attempting to drive cattle away from critical areas. Lease term reduced to single years.

199811

Observed grazing impacts in 1998 were less than in most previous seasons (grass and browse utilization). Whether this should be attributed to lease modifications or weather patterns (El Nino), cannot be determined.

The lease may be cancelled to fully achieve Standards and Guidelines. A proposed decision to cancel the lease was protested by the lessees. A final decision was postponed pending the results of intensive monitoring that is underway to examine impacts to both riparian areas and endangered species.

Riparian vegetation positively responding to action taken - looking greener and healthier. Small over-utilization areas show no improvement nor do they show further degradation because of their shallow soils underlaid with bedrock. Conclusions made through observation and monitoring.
