City to hold second abandoned vehicle auction

02:13 PM CST on Saturday, January 10, 2009

Michael Luke / Eyewitness News

NEW ORLEANS – The City of New Orleans will be holding an auction for abandoned vehicles.

The auction will take Thursday 10 a.m. at the Almonaster Auto Pound, at 10200 Almonaster Avenue and will be conducted by the Department of Public Works.  Vehicles can be viewed the day before from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“These auctions help clear city lots of abandoned vehicles allowing the department to handle additional vehicle complaints,” said Robert Mendoza, director of Public Works. “They can provide an excellent opportunity for citizens to purchase a car at a very good price.”

The auction will have 130 vehicles for sale, according to a statement from the Mayor’s Office, and the vehicles for sale have been unclaimed with excessive fines and fees or discarded on the streets.  The funding goes to the general fund for the city.

The vehicles must be purchased with cash or cashiers check.  City employees and relatives of city employees cannot purchase vehicles at the auction.

Brown’s Auction will handle the sale. All vehicle information will be on Brown’s Web site, www.brownsauction.com/jan15.html, no later than Wednesday, January 14. Any auction-related questions should be directed to Brown’s Auction Company at (337) 457-4919.
