BATON ROUGE, La. -- Hurricane evacuees who were provided with a travel trailer or mobile home and no longer need it should call FEMA and make arrangements for it to be picked up, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced today.
To return a unit, residents should call the FEMA Trailer Hotline at 1-888-294-2822 and tell the operator that they no longer need the unit. While FEMA's first priority is getting every evacuee into temporary housing, getting as many trailers back into FEMA's inventory as quickly as possible is also critical. This does takes time, as all units must be sent back to an area where they can be cleaned and refurbished before sending them out for use by another family.
Residents should call FEMA when they are ready to vacate the unit. When calling residents should ask to set up a day and time when they can be present to complete a move-out inspection and return the keys. The trailer should be in good condition with all personal property removed at the time of the inspection.
While occupying FEMA travel trailers or mobile homes, residents are responsible for maintaining their trailers, such as keeping them clean, changing light bulbs and smoke detector batteries, and making sure propane fuel tanks are refilled.
Travel trailers and mobile homes are inspected once a month for the occupant's safety and convenience. If a travel trailer or mobile home requires maintenance beyond basic upkeep, residents should call the appropriate travel trailer maintenance hotline for their parish.
