These corrections were originally published in the Jepson Globe. They apply to the first and second printings of The Jepson Manual and were incorporated in the third printing (March, 1996: see p. [vi]).

General Notes:

1. Users of Appendix III and synonyms in brackets [ ] need to be clearly informed that Appendix III and synonymy was based on Munz's A California Flora and Supplement but did not include any new names that may have appeared in Munz's A Flora of Southern California. (fide J. Hickman, Editor)
2. All synonymy and listings for name changes in Appendix III for Asteraceae are based on both Munz's A California Flora and Roxana Ferris' treatment of Asteraceae (Volume 4, Flora of the Pacific States). This because Ferris' treatment was considered by students of Asteraceae as an update (later version) of that appearing in the editions of Munz (fide D. Keil, editor of Asteraceae).
3. The new International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (Greuter et al., 1994; Regnum Vegetabile 131) has made certain recommendations (not necessarily required) regarding the correct orthography of names. They include:
   1. See Recommendation 60C (ICBN) for proper orthography of species epithets honoring women. The following are recommended spellings for some (but not all) such epithets appearing in the Jepson Manual: alexandrae¹ (Annie Alexander), eastwoodiae (Alice Eastwood), ferrisiae (Roxana Ferris), layneae (Katherine nee Layne Brandegee), pinzliae (Ann Pinzl), sharsmithiae (Helen Sharsmith).
      ¹ Because Alexander is a "classical" name, the suffix "drae" is correct for the feminine form. see Recommendation 60C, ICBN.
   2. See Recommendation 60G (ICBN) for proper orthography concerning changes from ..ae.. to ..i.. in some (BUT NOT ALL) epithets. Such spellings as "achilleaefolia", "alismaefolium", and "malvaeflora" may be changed to achilleifolia, alismifolium, and malviflora. Changes from "ae" to "i" or "eae" to "ei" should not be made globally, because it is necessary to examine very carefully the original intent of the author who legitimized the epithet.
   3. See Recommendation 60C. (ICBN) for the change from "ii" to "i" in endings of all specific epithets based on "classical" names (e.g., wislizenii to wislizeni, based on Wislizenus not Wislizenius, maximilianii to maximiliani, based on Maximilian).

Verified Corrections

Comments from persons other than authors, which could not be verified by (1) examination of original correspondence with author, (2) original manuscript in Jepson Manual Project files, or (3) with published literature or herbarium specimens, have NOT been incorporated.

All persons using The Jepson Manual should be aware that substantive corrections can be made only if they are accepted by the author(s) of a specific treatment. In the event an author is no longer able to verify the correction, full documentation should be given to the Editorial Board c/o Bruce Baldwin, Curator, Jepson Herbarium, University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720.
