Alexandria, Va., Jan. 14 – The National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association booklet, Guiding Principles for Sustainability, has won a Gold Award from Association TRENDS Magazine in the category of an association publication.

Association TRENDS All-Media Contest is an annual competition held exclusively for associations. This year's competition included nearly 400 overall entries, with 27 different categories. The award was given for the design and production of a 22-page booklet highlighting the activities of NSSGA and the industry's contributions to sustainability.

"We believe that sustainable aggregate operations are critical to the long-term viability of our industry and to the growth of the nation's economy," said NSSGA Chairman Steve Sloan, president and CEO, Midwest Minerals, Inc. "The board of directors adopted sustainability as a guiding principle in 2007. This booklet represents a collaborative effort of our members led by John Hayden, NSSGA's vice president of the Environment, Safety and Health Division, and Geoff Boraston from Granite Construction, Inc., who chaired the Sustainability Task Force. Our members identified sustainability as a business approach that integrates environmental stewardship, social responsibility and economic prosperity to ensure the long-term supply of aggregate materials to the communities in which we operate."

Tim Reagan, NSSGA's vice president of Marketing, added, "We needed an effective way to communicate our sustainability message to our members, legislators and the public. Our design firm, McCrosky Marketing, met the challenge by designing our Guiding Principles for Sustainability booklet. The reaction from our target audience has been overwhelmingly positive."

Based near the nation's capital, NSSGA is the world's largest mining association by product volume. Its member companies represent more than 90 percent of the crushed stone and 70 percent of the sand and gravel produced annually in the U.S. and approximately 118,000 working men and women in the aggregates industry. During 2007, a total of about 2.56 billion metric tons of crushed stone, sand and gravel, valued at $21 billion, were produced and sold in the United States.
