Highways for Life

NPHQ is pleased to add FHWA's Highways for Life to the NPHQ About Us/Related Sites page. The Highways for Life program is included and funded under the SAFETEA-LU Act. The program's goals are to improve safety, reduce congestion due to construction, and improve highway quality. Demonstration construction projects, technology transfer, technology partnerships, dissemination of information, monitoring and evaluation of program accomplishments, and stakeholder input and involvement are key components of this program. To learn more about this program and the opportunities available through it, please visit the Highways for Life web site.

America's roadway program is in the midst of a transformation.

Leading the revolution are partnerships of officials, contractors, engineers, community members, and others who have embraced the idea that an emphasis on quality - from design, to construction, to delivery and performance - produces the best possible return on the nation's roadway investment.

The National Partnership for Highway Quality exists to lead this highway quality movement.

So what do we mean by “quality?”

The word “quality” signals customer-focused roadway projects. And who is the customer? Not a contractor or a government official, but, you, the roadway user.

A “quality” project brings all stakeholders to the table – from roadway professionals to local citizens and businesses – to plan, coordinate, and carry out a roadway construction or maintenance project so that it delivers the maximum return on the public’s investment.

Through a commitment to the principles of quality management, even the most complex roadway projects are routinely delivered on budget, on time – in fact, often well ahead of schedule -- and with minimum negative impact on all concerned.

That’s why “quality” is recognized by the federal government, state departments of transportation, roadway contractors, and local stakeholders as the future of the American road.
Why is “quality” such a big deal now?
