Human ecology is an educational philosophy that applies knowledge from multiple disciplines to address environmental and social problems. This unique approach to education is the foundation of the college's academic program. It's also what makes College of the Atlantic different from other colleges.

Because College of the Atlantic is different, our website is different. Because students design their own majors, you won't find a list of pre-determined majors that you have to choose from. Because we believe that knowledge can't be easily categorized and indexed, courses and faculty aren't organized by academic department. Academic Program in a Nutshell:

As a student, you will have unusual latitude to design your own academic program. With this freedom comes the responsibility to take charge of your own learning. Here are a few things you should know:

• All students design their own interdisciplinary major and receive a B.A. in human ecology.
• Thirty-six credits are needed to graduate. Almost all classes count as one credit.
• We offer three terms a year. Students usually take three classes in each ten-week term.
• One term is devoted to the completion of a three-credit final project.
• Our average class size is 12.5. Our student-faculty ratio is 9:1.
