Research in the College of Pharmacy covers a wide spectrum of interests, from drug discovery to clinical testing to assessing clinical, economic and humanistic outcomes. Our programs involve undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students working with faculty in research that advances the quality of human health and strengthens Arizona's economy. Much of the research takes place in the following centers.

*Center for Toxicology
The Center for Toxicology addreses the toxic effects of drugs, chemicals and environmental stresses, with a special emphasis on environment issues of concern to the Southwest. It is home to the Southwest Environmental Health Sciences Center, the UA Superfund Research Program and Research Training in Toxicology and Toxicogenomics.

Southwest Environmental Health Sciences Center
The Southwest Environmental Health Sciences Center investigates mechanisms by which exposures to environmental agents  (and other stresses) contribute to human disease. It is composed of

  • Research cores that integrate scientists with common research interests
  • Facility cores with cutting-edge instrumentation and technology to address critical environmental health problems
  • Community outreach to provide toxicology-based educational programs to the public
  • The center includes scientists from 5 colleges and 14 departments across The University of Arizona campus. The center is supported by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, BIO5 and The University of Arizona.

The center awards grants for pilot projects in translational research. Learn more about the 2008 projects in this video.

UA Superfund Basic Research Program
The Superfund Basic Research Program at The University of Arizona is a collaborative research effort between toxicologists, environmental scientists and environmental engineers to address hazardous waste problems of the Southwest.
Sponsored by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, the program includes scientists from 5 colleges and 10 departments.

The program focuses on 3 environmental pollutants--halogenated organics, arsenic and mine tailings. Components of the program are

  • Training students to address complex environmental problems using multiple disciplines
  • The translation of the results to the public
  • Collaborations with our Mexican counterparts to solve common environmental problems.

U.S. -Mexico Binational Center for Environmental Sciences and Toxicology.

Our successful collaborations with Mexico resulted in the establishment of a new center that expands the training and exchange of U.S. and Mexican students concerning border environmental health issues and supports collaborative research projects on common environmental health and sciences issues. The new center is sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Research Training in Toxicology and Toxicogenomics
For almost 30 years, the graduate program in Pharmacology and Toxicology at The University of Arizona has been producing master's and doctoral graduates trained in the basic aspects of systems toxicology as well as receiving cutting-edge interdisciplinary research experience using state-of-the-art technologies. For more than 25 years, the training of these students has been supported, in part, by a training grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences

*The Center for Health Outcomes and PharmacoEconomic Research
The Center for Health Outcomes and PharmacoEconomic Research assesses healthcare interventions from a clinical, economic and humanistic view. Research focuses include cost-effectiveness analysis, quality-of-life assessment, pharmaceutical policy analysis, drug-use evaluation and more.

*Arizona Poison & Drug Information Center
The Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center at the College of Pharmacy not only answers more than 75,000 calls a year from the public and healthcare professionals, but also conducts research on antivenom for snake bite, spider bite and scorpion stings. Working together, faculty from the colleges of medicine, pharmacy and science are leaders in basic and clinical studies involving venoms and antivenoms. University of Arizona faculty have a unique history of interest and experience in venom research.

The Medication Management Center

The Medication Management Center is a first-of-its-kind center established in 2006 in response to the medication therapy management requirement of the Medicare Part D prescription drug benefit. The innovative pharmacist-run call center provides many services to Medicare beneficiaries and participates in research on the effects of medication therapy management.

*Designated as a center of excellence at the Arizona Health Sciences Center
