Public Outreach

Several programs and centers within the College of Pharmacy conduct educational, service or outreach efforts for the public, health professionals or specific groups as part of their mission; some of them are listed below.

Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center
Poison information specialists answer about 75,000 telephone calls a year from citizens and healthcare professionals. The health educator for the center presents to teachers, community organizations and businesses; staffs exhibits at health fairs and other events, and provides poison prevention materials.

Pregnancy Riskline
The Arizona Teratology Information Program is a toll-free, confidential telephone service available to pregnant and lactating women, their families and healthcare providers. It provides accurate and current information to callers about possible effects a drug or substance may have during a pregnancy or breastfeeding and participates in health fairs and other educational programs.

Southwest Environmental Health Sciences Center
The center provides a wide range of educational services for K-12 teachers and classrooms, including curricula to teach toxicology and environmental health, lesson plans and support materials and PowerPoint presentations.

Superfund Basic Research Program
The primary objective of Superfund Basic Research Programs outreach to Mexico efforts is to provide training, education and teaching tools in Spanish as well as to strengthen partnerships with Mexican universities and research institutes to create a functional and permanent binational consortium dealing with border environmental health issues.

U.S.-Mexico Binational Center for Environmental Sciences and Toxicology
The University of Arizona received a $1.46M federal earmark administered through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to set up a binational center to resolve environmental health challenges along the U.S.-Mexico border. The binational center partnered with UA scientists from six colleges and Mexican scientists from 11 different universities and research institutes. The multidisciplinary international team conducts collaborative research, human capacity activities and community outreach in environmental science and toxicology.
