Informational days are offered in the student union with booths about different countries and cultures. Senate members are elected annually by vote of the student body; in addition, campus organizations elect representatives to Student Senate . Meetings are held on the second and fourth Thursday of each month throughout the academic year.

OWLS (Older, Wiser, Learners)
OWLS, a local Iowa adult student organization, was developed in the 1970's by now retired Student Service faculty member Janet Meade. Addressing a need to promote self-help in student programming and provide service to the college community, the club has been reactivated based on student interest. Adult students often feel out of place in the classroom and they have different needs than the traditional 18- and 19-year old college students. Club members can support each other by discussing their common efforts to balance work, school, family and other commitments.

Members also provide student peer insight and leadership to other prospective and new MCC students who share their concerns. Meetings started in September, 2005, and currently the organization is growing to become a major college influence. There are no dues, but donations are welcome.

Members work on projects from orientation tours to co-sponsoring a gift drive for the House of Compassion Adopt-a-Family project. Active members will have an opportunity to apply/compete for a small limited-fund book scholarship in 2007. Working membership helps students reinforce leadership skills and can provide opportunities for additional references through networking within the organization.

Additional information is available by contacting faculty advisor and charter sponsor Dr. Dava James, room 217, (641) 752-7106, Ext. 5740.

YFU Newsletters

MCC and YFU offer area residents the opportunity to "welcome the world home" by opening their homes and hearts to international students who will be arriving each summer. Upon their arrival, students will live with volunteer host families within reasonable commuting distance of the college. Students take part in all aspects of college life, from attending classes to joining sports and club activities. The host family provides room, board, love and guidance, and the experience of what everyday life is like in the United States.

MCC's YFU coordinator, Barb Jennings , and will be happy to answer questions and share information on the host family experience.
