Chicago Urban Initiative

From rooftops to community gardens to farmers’ markets, we’re preparing leaders in Chicago to make positive food system changes in their communities. A new community garden is helping kids imagine new possibilities for themselves and their neighborhood, where there are few safe, open spaces to play. Refugees are reconnecting with the agricultural life they thought they had to leave behind when they moved to Chicago. Faith communities are learning to reconnect with where food comes from, and working together to create a sustainable future.

Our Chicago Urban Initiative works with a wide variety of groups to develop community-based projects that increase access to fresh, healthy food and connect urban families with farmers and the land. Our work is based on a participatory project model that builds the leadership capacity of individuals and enables communities to make a real difference in the local food system.
