This study is designed to develop and assess the effectiveness of intervention strategies designed to reduce the incidence and severity of work-related eye injuries and illnesses in Latino farmworkers in Illinois and Michigan. The project goals are: 1) to describe the current control methods used by Latino farmworkers in Illinois and Michigan to reduce eye injuries and illnesses; 2) to determine the intentions and prominent beliefs of these Latino farmworkers associated with utilizing control strategies during farm work; 3) to deliver an intervention program based on the intentions and prominent beliefs elucidated; 4) to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention program on the utilization of control methods in reducing eye injuries and illnesses; 5) to put into place a long-range, eye injuries and illnesses prevention program; and 6) to build partnerships between universities migrant service organizations, Latino farmworkers, farm owners, and local health care professionals.
