Agroecology students at North Carolina State University have two experiential learning opportunities to learn about farming practices that promote sustainable agriculture, the Summer Internship in Sustainable Agriculture and the Agroecology in Tropical America study abroad course taught in Costa Rica.

AGROECOLOGY MINOR AT NC STATE UNIVERSITY
LEARNING BY DOING

Summer Internship Program for Sustainable Agriculture (click on link for more information) - This 8 week internship program at the Center for Environmental Farming Systems in Goldsboro, NC provides individuals with hands-on experience in organic production practices and experiential learning education across diverse sustainable production systems. Students will combine meaningful classroom discussion with on farm agricultural experiences and inquiry-based research exercises to understand how agroecology principles are applied to real-world agricultural practices and resource management.
Specific sustainable agriculture principles and practices that students will be exposed to are:

  • Integrated pest management
  • Integrated animal systems including pasture-based livestock management, rotational chicken and turkey operations, and rotational goat management
  • Socio-economic and marketing aspects of sustainable agriculture
  • Soil management and soil ecology

Agroecology in Tropical America Study Abroad Course
in Costa Rica:

- This 3 week summer study abroad course jointly offered through the University of Georgia and North Carolina State University offers students the experience of learning about agroecology principles and practices at work in a diversity of tropical agricultural systems in Costa Rica. Traveling among Costa Rica’s diverse tropical ecosystems, students will examine sustainable agricultural practices common across Latin America and interact with local farmers, researchers, and students.
