We answer 75,000 calls a year.
- About half of our calls concern a human exposure to something toxic.
- About half of our exposure calls involve young children.
Calls are answered by registered pharmacists who are also certified specialists in poison information.
The Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center is a center of excellence at The University of Arizona College of Pharmacy. The center is certified by the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC).
Across the country
During 2005, AAPCC recorded more than 2.4 million human exposures reported to and by 61 U.S. poison centers.
More than 70% of these calls were able to be managed on-site, without visits to healthcare facilities. With an average emergency room visit costing $560, poison center calls potentially saved $997,395,280 in annual medical expenses.
- More than 50% of 2005 exposures were to children under 6
Cosmetics and personal care products accounted for 13+% of these exposures, cleaning substances almost 9%, painkillers about 8%.
- Nearly 90% of poison fatalities were to adults over 20 (70% of deaths were to people age 20-59)
Painkillers accounted for 15% of adult poison exposures; sedatives, antipsychotics and hypnotics accounted for 12%; cleaning substances, 9%
