Submit a new record.
If you see a butterfly or moth, take a photograph, and then contact your state/regional coordinator to submit that information to the database. Make sure to include your name, the location (address, city, and county, state, territory, or country), and the date when you saw the insect. If you do not have a photograph, don't contact the coordinator! Photographs are required for new submissions.

Submit a new photograph.
Do you have a clear, high resolution close-up photograph of a butterfly, moth, or caterpillar? Read our instructions for submitting photographs. Follow the steps to submit photographs for use on the web site. We welcome photographs from amateurs and professionals alike.

Edit the species accounts.
Have you seen a mistake in a species account? Please volunteer to help make this site scientifically accurate and up to date. Contact us with the species name, new text, and the relevant source citation. Note: Only for qualified scientists.

Volunteer as a state/regional coordinator.
Our state and regional coordinators are trained lepidopterists who are responsible for quality control of data stored in this database. Do you have significant experience identifying butterflies and moths? Are you a member of the Lepidopterists' Society, the North American Butterfly Association, or a similar organization? If so, we could use your help. Browse our list of available coordinator positions.

Be an "on call" volunteer.
We often have tasks that can be completed by volunteers who have little training or experience as lepidopterists. Contact us to have your name added to the list of volunteers, and tell us a little about what type of volunteer work you would like to do.
