Evans Taps Kaufman for Chief of Staff
As Bond Returns to Technology Administration
U.S. Commerce Secretary Don Evans today announced that Alison Lisi
Kaufman will serve as chief of staff. Kaufman will replace Technology
Administration (TA) Under Secretary Phil Bond, who will return to
TA full-time.
Lisi
Kaufmans proven track record as an effective manager and strategic
thinker has made her a key advisor to both Deputy Secretary Bodman
and myself, Evans said. Phil, while wearing both his Chief
of Staff and Under Secretary hats, has masterfully managed to build
upon our success at the Commerce Department. As Under Secretary, he
will continue to help us develop science and technology policy to
maximize Americas economic and jobs growth.
Kaufman was appointed Chief of Staff to Commerce Deputy Secretary
Sam Bodman in November of 2001. She is serving her second tour of
government service at the department. From 1989 to 1993, she was the
Deputy Assistant Secretary for Intergovernmental Affairs. Immediately
prior to her appointment as Chief of Staff, Kaufman directed the Washington,
D.C. office of Governor John G. Rowland of Connecticut.
Bond was nominated by President Bush, unanimously confirmed by the
U.S. Senate and began his service as Under Secretary for Technology
at the Commerce Department in October 2001.
Following a transition period, the staff change will take effect at
the end of this month.
