Statement by U.S. Commerce Secretary Don Evans on GDP

Washington, DC - Today's better number, unfortunately, is not better news for Americans out of a job. Since the President proposed stimulus legislation in October over a million people have lost their jobs. The President's plan for economic security-- stimulus, energy, and trade legislation-- will create more, better jobs so Americans who want to work, can. The President has provided leadership to spur economic growth. Consumers have been leading. Now it is time for Congress to show leadership, end the bickering, and turn the corner towards another good number: new jobs.
