Objective

To evaluate the reliability of Self-Contained Self-Rescuers (SCSRs) deployed in US underground coal mines.

Project Scope

Collect 200 SCSRs per year from a variety of regions, type of mining operations, and deployment mode, according to market share.
Test the apparatus on a breathing and metabolic simulator (90%) and on human subjects walking on a treadmill (10%) to determine life support capability and to ensure that every apparatus that passes its inspection criteria can be relied upon for emergency life support.
Perform data analysis and write reports for publication.
