Objective

  • To evaluate the reliability of Self-Contained Self-Rescuers (SCSRs) deployed in US underground coal mines.

Project Scope


  • Collect 200 SCSRs per year from a variety of regions, type of mining operations, and deployment mode, according to market share.
  • Test the apparatus on a breathing and metabolic simulator (90%) and on human subjects walking on a treadmill (10%) to determine life support capability and to ensure that every apparatus that passes its inspection criteria can be relied upon for emergency life support.
  • Perform data analysis and write reports for publication.

  • Reports of Investigation for Phase 8 and Phase 9 (RI 9671)
  • Problem reports to NIOSH Technology Evaluation Branch
  • Directives to SCSR manufacturers for corrective actions

Outcomes

  • Validation that equipment is performing as certified
  • Corrective actions by manufacturers to address reported problems.
