NREL supports several U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) initiatives that have been shaped by the Energy Policy Act of 1992 and other pieces of legislation and executive orders intended to accelerate the use of alternative fuels and vehicles.
NREL's technology integration work provides DOE with analyses of emerging alternative fuel and vehicle technologies. This information is used to determine the relevance of the technologies and their potential impact on petroleum reduction goals.
We also provide technical assistance and other resources to communities and voluntary fleets across the nation working to implement alternative fuels and vehicles through DOE's Clean Cities initiative.
Additionally, the Regulatory Support team brings together regulated, voluntary, and alternative fuel provider fleets in specific geographic regions to maximize the use of alternative fuels and minimize petroleum consumption.
