On March 1, 1867, Nebraska became a state and with it the village of Lancaster--renamed "Lincoln" after the U.S. President--became our capital city. Today Lincoln is a vibrant city, home of Nebraska's state government, the University of Nebraska and a leader of business, education and cultural activity.

UNL Extension in Lancaster County serves a diverse population in one of the fastest-growing metro areas of the region. According to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau estimates, our community has a county population of 250,291. The population of residents living in urban areas is 226,460. Surrounding Lincoln are 18 villages and towns; 1,600 farms; 364,544 cropland acres; 15,000 acres of recreational area and over 3,600 acreages.
