Selected Databases
NIOSH Power Tools Database
The HLR program developed a database that contains sound power levels, sound pressure levels in the operator's hearing zone, and downloadable exposure files for commonly used power tools. The database is particularly helpful in determining the "real-world" noise level of power tools as they are used on the job.
2003 Hearing Protector Compendium
This database collects data published by manufacturers of hearing protectors sold in the United States. The data include the mean attenuations and standard deviations of the attenuations provided by the manufacturers on labeling required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Also provided are data about protector construction, materials, and other features that may aid in selection of protectors for specific situations.
More information on these and other databases developed by the hearing loss program can be found on the program's National Acadamies' Evidence Package site. For each database, you will find a description of the issue, approach, and output (the database). You will also see a description of “What's Ahead” for efforts to promote or enhance the database.
