Inputs: National Research Agenda (NORA)

As NORA approached its 10-year milestone, public meetings were hosted in cities around the country during December 2005 to March 2006 to seek input from individuals and organizations on important research issues. Participants included workers, professional societies, organized labor, employers, researchers, health professionals, government officials and elected representatives. Information was requested on important occupational safety and health issues, such as priority diseases, injuries, and exposures, populations at risk, and needs of the occupational safety and health system. Input also was requested on the types of research and partners needed to make a difference. This input will be used to create research agendas for the next decade.

The economic causes as well as consequences of occupational injury and illness were mentioned by many of the participants in the town hall meetings. Comments on economics also were provided on the NORA Web site. The data from all the comments submitted still are being analyzed. Preliminary analyses of the comments suggest that research needs on economics issues may include the following:

  • Studying the link between health and productivity as a tool for demonstrating to employers that it makes economic sense to invest in workers’ safety, health, and training
  • Developing cost-effective solutions to prevent repetitive motion injuries
  • Researching the social and economic consequences of depression and alcohol and drug abuse among health care workers
  • Developing affordable behavior-based safety management in mining
  • Investigating the prevalence of antibiotic resistance through exposure in animal agriculture and the resulting cost of treating drug-resistant infections
  • Studying the economic forces that affect fishers’ dangerous working conditions
  • Developing cost-effective interventions for fall protection in construction
  • Developing objective measures of worker productivity and presenteeism
