EconomicsOutputs: ConferencesPast Conferences Co-Sponsored by NIOSHIn November 2004, NIOSH and the World Health Organization convened the Economic Evaluation of Occupational Health and Safety Interventions at the Company Level conference that brought together global representatives from safety and health, research, economics and management from both developed and developing nations. Their charge was to examine the current state of the use of economic knowledge and tools to demonstrate the economic gains from occupational safety and health interventions. The invited presentations from the meeting are highlighted in the July 2005 issue of the Journal of Safety Research. The WorkLife Initiative is the NIOSH response to the October 2004 Steps to a Healthier U.S. Workforce Symposium. The Symposium, organized by NIOSH with more than 20 co-sponsors and 50 supporters, reviewed the science, economics, and current practices coordinating health protection and health promotion to improve the health of workers. Symposium participants called on NIOSH to continue to show leadership in promoting research, policy, and practice in these areas. The Social and Economic Consequences of Workplace Illness and Injury NORA Team, in conjunction with the Health Services Research Team, convened the national conference Functional, Economic, and Social Outcomes of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses: Integrating Social, Economic, and Health Services Research in June 1999. Researchers from government agencies, public and private research organizations, academic institutions, and worker groups provided their recommendations.
