The National Renewable Energy Laboratory's 20th Anniversary: 1997

This collection of photos highlights significant events in the 20-year history of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), which began operations in 1977 as the Solar Energy Research Institute and became NREL in 1991.

PIX 00573 #00573 - The oil crisis of the mid 70's prompted researchers to develop alternative sources of energy that would leave the nation less dependent on imported oil.

PIX 04583 #04583 - President Jimmy Carter (center) was welcomed to the Solar Energy Research Institute (SERI) on May 3, 1978, by Director Paul Rappaport (left). The President inspected solar panels and addressed the staff. But who is the really young researcher on the right? (Hint: He is now a Center Director).
