Transportation, Warehousing and UtilitiesOutputs: ProductsANSI Z15 Standard, Safe Practices for Motor Vehicle OperationsIn cooperation with numerous other stakeholders, staff in the NIOSH Division of Safety Research made substantial contributions to the development of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standard Z15.1, Safe Practices for Motor Vehicle Operations, which received final approval from ANSI on February 15, 2006. The Z15.1 standard is intended to further prevention of motor vehicle crashes, which are the leading cause of workplace fatalities and a major contributor to workers' compensation and liability costs, lost productivity, and property loss. The standard delineates minimum requirements for workplace traffic safety programs, and was designed for use by any organization whose employees drive on the job. Among the many topics addressed in the standard are: the importance of management commitment to traffic safety, selection and qualification of drivers, maintenance and inspection procedures, management of driver risk factors such as impaired and aggressive driving, incident reporting, and recommended measures of risk. Approval of the Z15.1 standard is a landmark achievement in worker protection; this is the first occupational safety standard that offers comprehensive guidance to protect all workers who operate a motor vehicle as part of their job. More information on the Z15.1 standard is available from the American Society of Safety Engineers, which serves as the administrative point of contact, at http://www.asse.org/cartpage.php?=3387.
