Fencing

Description and Application

Fencing is sometimes required in revegetation projects to protect young seedlings from wild and domestic grazing animals.  There are good publications from fencing companies that describe fencing methods and equipment in detail.  Much of the information is available on the companies’ website.  An excellent book on fencing is available from the Society for Range Management.

Post Hole Diggers                                                                                     Top of Page

Description and Application

Post hole diggers are rotating augers that are used to dig holes for fence posts.  Most units are mounted on a tractor’s 3-point hitch.  They are powered by the hydraulic system or power-take-off (PTO) and are raised and lowered by the hitch.  They can also be mounted on a front-end loader or a skid-steer loader.  Self-contained power augers are useful when a tractor is not practical or available.  These augers have many applications for small- and medium-size revegetation sites.  Augers can operate in moderately rocky soil, but they can be damaged in soil with large rocks.

Post Drivers                                                                                                Top of Page

Description and Application

Post drivers are used to push wood or steel posts into the soil.  They are a practical, effective, and economical method of installing fence posts in most types of soil.  Most drivers function like piledrivers by repeatedly dropping a weight on the post.  They are driven either hydraulically or by a PTO.  Drivers can be front or rear mounted on a tractor or front mounted on a skid-steer loader.

Wire Rollers                                                                                                Top of Page

Description and Application

Wire rollers are used to roll-up fence wire or cable.  They can be self-contained and powered by a small engine or they can be attached to a tractor's 3-point hitch and powered by a hydraulic motor.  Wire is attached to a reel, and as the reel turns, it winds the wire onto the reel.  The spools of wire can then be stored for later use.  They can be very useful when moving numerous fences.

Land-leveling Scrapers                                                                            Top of Page

Description and Application

Land-leveling scrapers are very efficient and cost effective for moving soil from one location to another.  Rubber-tired tractors with shift-on-the go transmissions are used to pull these units.  They can be used as single or tandem scrapers.  Several styles are available, and single units range in capacity from 5 to 18 cubic yards.  Required tractor horsepower varies from 100 to 500.  Land-leveling scrapers are widely used for leveling farmland, construction sites, and road projects.  They are generally not used for long-haul applications.

Water Hydration                                                                                         Top of Page

Description and Application

Personnel must be careful during outdoor activities on revegetation projects to prevent dehydration.  A supply of fresh water is needed at all times.  Cycling enthusiasts developed water-holding backpacks with a tube to deliver water to the user so they did not have to carry water bottles.  “CamelBaks” as they are called have become a highly popular hydration system for all outdoor activities, including military operations.
