NIOSH Programs > Services > Sector Description ServicesInput: Sector DescriptionThe Services sector includes industries and administrative programs among these subsectors: Information; Finance and Insurance; Real Estate; Professional, Scientific and Technical Services; Management of Enterprises and Corporations; Administrative Support and Waste Technologies; Education; Arts, Entertainment and Recreation; Accommodation and Food Service; Other Services; and Public Administration. These industries and programs are within the following NAICS codes, respectively: 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56, 61, 71, 72, 81, and 92. A large portion of these workers are employed in office environments yet many others work with an array of recognized hazards. The Services sectorcomprises establishments that range from banks and other financial institutions to automotive repair and fast food service restaurants. The largest populations of workers are employed by education entities (12 million), food and accommodations (11 million), government (9 million), administrative support and waste (8 million), professional, scientific and technical (7 million), and finance and insurance (6 million). The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimated more than 65 million workers were employed across these Service Sectors, which is equivalent to slightly more than 50% of the entire U.S. workforce.
