NIOSH/Emergency Preparedness and Response Research Portfolio Town Hall Meeting

NIOSH is conducting a public meeting that will address priorities for emergency preparedness and response research. Participants are invited to speak for 5 minutes to summarize their written responses to prepared discussion questions. Participants may register to speak during either the morning or afternoon session, though they are encouraged to stay for both sessions. The public meeting is open to everyone, including all workers, professional societies, organized labor, employers, researchers, health professionals, government officials, and elected officials.
13th International Respiratory Protection of Health Care Workers and Emergency Responders

The 13th International Conference of the International Society for Respiratory Protection: Respiratory Protection of Health Care Workers, Emergency Responders, and Emerging Hazards was held August 27 through September 1, 2006 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Topics for papers included respiratory protection for health care workers, emergency responders, and those in developing countries, updates on standards and regulations, emerging hazards and technologies, and fundamentals of respiratory protection.
International Mining Health and Safety Symposium
April 20–22, 2006
NIOSH, the Mine Safety and Health Administration, and the State of West Virginia sponsored the International Mining Health and Safety Symposium on April 20–22, 2006, in Wheeling, WV, to focus on issues such as how mine equipment is approved and how to accelerate adoption of state-of-the-art technologies, both from traditional sources and by adapting technologies developed for other applications.
Current Issues and Future Directions in Disaster Mental Health
March 1-4, 2006, Miami, FL
Sponsored by the American Psychological Association, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, the National Institute of Justice, the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, and the U.S. Department of Labor. Discussion topics included the 2004 hurricanes: a Florida Department of Health survey; consequences of fatigue on disaster response and counter-terror efforts; the interactions among fatigue, stress, and health in police officers; stress risks and outcomes in protective services and first responders; training first responders to manage critical incident stress; the Katrina experience: meeting the community's psychosocial needs; stress and mental health in military personnel: current issues.
