Enjoying Oregon's native flora
Oregon has over 4000 species of native plants. Large or small, abundant or rare, each is unique and special.
Student of the flora! (Norm Jensen)
Ecoregions ranging from coastal sand dunes and mountain forest to prairie grasslands and alpine lava fields provide a myriad of habitats for these plants.
Local chapters hold meetings, field trips, and plant shows and sales for members and non-members alike, making available the knowledge and wonder of our native plants to everyone.
Conservation & preservation
Over 200 of our native plant species (including fungi) are rare or in danger of extinction, with no secure populations anywhere in the world.
Another 300+ species are rare or threatened in Oregon, although safe elsewhere.
Native plants provide food and support for wildlife that introduced plants cannot.
Conserving and preserving species and habitat for all native species, but especially those in danger, is a priority for NPSO.
Study and education
NPSO, both at the state level and through individual chapters, provides support for research about native plants.
Classes providing information about native plants are given by local chapters.
The NPSO Bulletin and our journal, Kalmiopsis, provide timely and in-depth coverage of issues relating to native plants.
The NPSO journal, containing in-depth articles on Oregon's native plants, stories of people who were and are part of our botanical heritage, book reviews, and more.
