A new Fat Man comes to the Bradbury

February 27, 2007

The newest model of the historic Fat Man bomb, left, sits next to Little Boy at the Bradbury Science Museum on Monday ready for setup and display.

Fat Man is one of two nuclear weapons along with Little Boy that were developed during the top secret Manhattan Project in Los Alamos. The first nuclear weapons in history to be used in warfare, Little Boy and Fat Man were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, in August of 1945 helping to bring to an end the pacific conflict and World War II.

Synthetic Authentics and Mineola Pipe and Steel fabricated the new model using the original plans, correct color, scale, and, design - complimenting the newest version of Little Boy which they also built that is on display at the museum.

The older version of Fat Man will eventually be displayed at the Laboratory's newly restored V-site where the Gadget, which became the prototype for the Fat Man bomb, was assembled for testing at Trinity site in Southern New Mexico on July 16, 1945.

The Bradbury Science Museum is part of the Laboratory's Community Programs Office.
