Avian influenza subject of Frontiers in Science talk

LOS ALAMOS, N.M., December 4, 2006 — How Los Alamos Is helping respond to a potential pandemic

Los Alamos National Laboratory has uniquely capable scientists eyeing the coming risk of a pandemic flu, and several of them have agreed to serve on a panel for the first of an upcoming Frontiers in Science lecture beginning Wednesday, December 6 in Taos. Admission is free.

"Avian Influenza: How Los Alamos is helping respond to a potential pandemic," is the theme of the session, and the panel will be composed of ornithologist Jeanne Fair, physicist Norman Johnson and mathematical biologist Ruy Ribeiro, with the head of the Laboratory's Biosciences Division, Gary Resnick, as moderator.

Topics will include a historical perspective of infectious disease, the current global situation, the biology of the influenza virus itself, and how government policy could influence the spread of the flu should it come to pass.

The presentations will be offered in several Northern New Mexico locations over the next several days:
