County to continue prescribed burn Saturday

November 17, 2006

Updated at 8:50 a.m.

The Los Alamos County Parks Division and the Los Alamos Fire Department will continue maintenance burning in Pueblo Canyon on Saturday, November 18. The operation will burn about 10 acres in Pueblo Canyon just west of last weekend's burn. Burning is expected to begin around 11 a.m. and end by 2:30 p.m. Smoke will be visible from all parts of Los Alamos and from Highway 502. Monitors will watch the volume and direction of the smoke, and the burn will be shut down if smoke dispersal is unsatisfactory.

Although this burn is smaller than the one conducted last week, there is plenty of dead and down wood to produce smoke. Lesser amounts of smoke may be visible on Sunday, as stumps and downed logs continue to burn. Crews will monitor the area throughout the weekend and into next week.

A tour of the area treated by last weekend's burn will be offered at 1 p.m. on Sunday, November 19, starting from the New Mexico Department of Transportation yard at the White Rock/Los Alamos interchange.
