Employees reminded about safety while moving

By Erik C. Eakins

Moving increases the possibility of injuries. The clinical staff at Occupational Medicine (OM-DO) reminds employees to follow a few simple safety guidelines while relocating offices during the transition.

• When packing boxes, remember not to over pack containers; they may become too heavy to lift safely.
• Use smaller boxes, because large and over sized cartons are awkward to lift without assistance.
• Use assist devices such as hand carts, lift gates, and dollies whenever possible.
• Wearing appropriate clothing is important, because dropping items on an open-toed shoe or because of loose clothing getting in the way may cause an injury.
• Remember to move your feet and not just your shoulders when carrying items since twisting or bending while lifting may pull muscles and other injuries. Overstraining when reaching or pulling items could cause similar problems.
• When lifting items off a surface lower than the waist, remember to squat to lift instead of bending over, because squatting uses the legs to raise the item while bending places greater strain on the back.

Weather also can affect the moving process. On hot days remember to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and/or a hat. Light showers will cause slippery roads and sidewalks.

Pay attention to surroundings because packing and moving could create tripping hazards and allow adequate time to move.

The Lab offers services to help make moving safer and easier. Organizational property management representatives and facilities managers can assist in moving. Employees also can write to handyman@lanl.gov by electronic mail to request assistance when moving.
