Lab employees, retirees receiving UC book

By Ed Kellum

June 30, 2006

A book that summarizes the accomplishments and events at the Laboratory over the past six decades is being distributed to all employees. Science in the National Interest - Photographs Celebrating Six Decades of Excellence is a 225-page coffee table gift to employees from the University of California to commemorate UC’s 63-year management of the Laboratory.

Laboratory employees are receiving books at their mail stop and Lab retirees are receiving the book in CD format at their homes.

“In recognition of the University of California’s unique contributions and role at Los Alamos over those historic years, the university wants to express its gratitude to the Laboratory’s most important asset - you,” former Lab Director Bob Kuckuck, wrote in a letter accompanying the book.

“Reaction to the book has been very positive,” said Cecilia Olivas of the Director’s Office. “Some people are asking for additional copies, but unfortunately, due to limited printing, we do not have any extra. They were a gift from UC and Lab funds were not used to produce them,” she said.

“If people look through the book and decide they do not want to keep it, mail it to the Director’s Office at Mail Stop A100,” said Olivas, adding that Linda Anderman in the Community Programs (CPO) Office is keeping a list of additional requests. “If there is sufficient interest, the university will consider a second printing,” Olivas said.

The book includes a forward from UC President Robert Dynes and has hundreds of images, black and white and color, of historical events at the Laboratory. The book is broken down by decade and captions accompany the photos.
