Stricter fines in place for illegal parking

By Kathy Delucas

May 9, 2006

People who park illegally at the Laboratory and jeopardize another person’s health and safety will face stiffer fines beginning May 15.

Under a new parking policy, Laboratory employees, subcontract personnel and visitors who park in a handicapped space without a placard, a fire lane, or other safety zone identified by markings or signs will be subject to a fine of $50 rather than the current $20. In addition, parking violators may have their cars towed and be required to pay a $100 towing fee.

The directive comes from the newly released Implementation Procedure for Parking (IMP 908.0). To read the new IMP, click here (Adobe Acrobat Reader required).

The associate director for security and facility operations (ADSFO), Utilities and Infrastructure (FM-UI), and Security Support (S-5) issued the IMP to curb the number of parking violations that pose safety and security concerns.

Besides significantly boosting the cost of fines, the Parking IMP also consolidates in one document a number of parking-related policies, including the construction, maintenance and modification of parking lots.

Anyone who parks at the Laboratory needs to be familiar with the Parking IMP. Parking enforcement officers are under strict orders to crack down on safety or security violations. All employees and regular visitors should become familiar with the new enforcement regulations. Repeat violations could result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination.

The new directive also formalizes the process for the installation of parking lot signs. Previously, certain groups and divisions made their own signs, including signs that reserved a parking spot for a division leader or employee of the month. The Laboratory will no longer condone preferential treatment when it comes to parking. Requests for parking lot signs now have to be submitted to and approved by FM-UI at 5-5106.
