LOS ALAMOS, N.M., March 8, 2006 — Northern New Mexico business owners who have questions about marketing, financing, training or education, or on how to do business with government agencies like Los Alamos National Laboratory now have a resource guide to help answer these types of questions.

The Community and Business Resource Guide is a 32-page publication developed by a subcommittee of the Laboratory's Business Advisory Council.

The guide can be viewed or downloaded from the Laboratory's Community Relations Office Web page.

The guide was developed jointly by Los Alamos' Small Business Program Office, the Government Relations Community Relations Offices and the Business Advisory Council.

"A market positioning working group of the Business Advisory Council headed by local business owner Alice Quintanillla, researched, wrote and developed the Community and Business Resource Guide," said Rich Marquez, Los Alamos' associate director for administration.

The guide is intended for New Mexico businesses interested in either receiving government contracts or utilizing resources throughout the state, with the intent of building business capacity and capabilities. The guide is divided into sections for government contracting and general business resources.

"I am enthusiastic about the potential of this guide, which is a by-product of the efforts made over the past three years to engage the community in our business strategies," said Marquez.

Business owners who need to contact the federal Small Business Administration or local small business development centers, for example, can find contact information, phone numbers and addresses in the government contracting section.

Likewise, business owners who want to learn about government regulations and requirements or a list of procurement organizations at the state and local government as well as federal government levels, can find this information in the government contracting section.

Business owners who are seeking venture capitalists to help them with start-up funding or other assistance, as well as information on financial questions can go to the business resource section of the guide. Assistance for Native American business owners also can be found in this section.

The guide is focused on primarily the seven-county region of Los Alamos, Santa Fe, Taos, Rio Arriba, San Miguel, Mora and Sandoval counties but does contain some Albuquerque and other statewide resources.

The Web-based version of the resource guide is available as a pdf file; Adobe Acrobat Reader is needed to open the file. Business owners who don't have access to the guide from the Internet can obtain it from Los Alamos' Community Relations Office.

The Business Advisory Council, co-chaired by Marquez and former Gov. Toney Anaya, is one of three councils created by the Laboratory to enhance and strengthen the Laboratory's ongoing business improvement initiatives, and foster greater economic development in Northern New Mexico and the state. The others are the Senior Management Procurement Council and the Consortium of Major Laboratory Subcontractors. All operate out of Los Alamos' Associate Directorate for Administration.
