Department of Defense official to give classified talk on U.S. nuclear weapons policy

By Kevin N. Roark

August 16, 2005

Thomas Scheber of the Principal Associate Director for Nuclear Weapons Program (PADNWP), senior director for strike policy and integration in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Policy, will talk about the nation's nuclear weapons policy as it relates to the 2001 Nuclear Posture Review at a classified Director's Colloquium Wednesday in the Administration Building Auditorium at Technical Area 3.

The talk begins at 1:10 p.m., and is open to Q-cleared employees only, with sigmas 1-10. No foreign nationals may attend.

At the talk, Scheber will outline a comprehensive picture of the emerging policy framework regarding nuclear weapons and deterrence strategy.

At the Department of Defense, Scheber is responsible for the development and oversight of policy related to U.S. nuclear weapons and strategic forces. He has held the position since September 2004.

In 2000, prior to his current assignment, Scheber worked on defense policy at DoD on a change-of-station from the Laboratory. Before moving to Washington, D.C., he was in the Nuclear Weapons Technology Directorate at Los Alamos.

He joined the Laboratory in 1989 and managed the Lab's weapon studies program, investigating emerging trends in warfare and evaluating potential applications of advanced technologies and weapon concepts.

In 1998 he was selected to lead the Military Applications Group, a "think tank" of senior Lab weapon designers, engineers and analysts conducting assessments of 21st century strategies for military applications.
