60th Anniversary activities continue at Lab

As part of the Laboratory's 60th Anniversary celebration, the staff of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center at Technical Area 53 will offer tours of key LANSCE facilities as well as a talk by Lab Senior Fellow Emeritus Louis Rosen on Wednesday.

Activities at LANSCE begin at 8:30 a.m., with a talk by Rosen about the history of LANSCE. Rosen is one of the LANSCE founders. His talk, "The Evolution of LAMPF/LANSCE," is in the Building MPF-1 Auditorium.

"LANSCE keeps Los Alamos at the forefront in several areas critical to the Laboratory, such as stockpile stewardship and helping to maintain our reputation for excellence in science, world-class facilities and top-flight staff," said Joyce Roberts, LANSCE Division senior adviser and coordinator for the day's events. "We thought the 60th Anniversary would provide a perfect occasion for us to show LANSCE to the rest of the Laboratory community."

Rosen began his Laboratory career during the Manhattan Project in 1944 and helped lead Los Alamos' diversification into world-class, nuclear physics. He is a former leader of the Medium Energy Physics Division and former director of the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility, LANSCE's former name. Rosen recently was presented the 2002 Los Alamos Medal (see the April 8 Daily Newsbulletin and the Dec. 16 Daily Newsbulletin) and also is a recipient of the E.O. Lawrence Award.

A reception with refreshments and conversation will follow Rosen's talk.

Beginning at 10 a.m. visitors may visit several experimental facilities at LANSCE for self-guided tours, where they can learn about the development and achievements of the LANSCE user facility and current and planned research at the following key facilities:

  • Lujan Neutron Scattering Center, lobby MPF-622;
  • Weapons Neutron Research Facility, lobby MPF-7;
  • Proton Radiography Facility, Room 100 of MPF 3P, north side of the accelerator;
  • Accelerator Technology Laboratory, outside MPF-17.
Wednesday's events are restricted to Laboratory badgeholders and invited guests.

LANSCE is a national user facility that supports the National Nuclear Security Administration's mission as well as programs for the Department of Energy Office of Science. LANSCE's Isotope Production Facility for DOE's Office of Nuclear Energy Science and Technology will be operational later this year.

Additional 60th Anniversary activities are scheduled in the coming months. Schedules and general information about 60th Anniversary activities are available at http://sixty.lanl.gov online. New events will be added to the event schedule frequently.
