By Public Affairs Office

March 14, 2003

Workers from Jack B. Henderson Construction Co. of Los Alamos and Albuquerque apply scratch coat to the exterior of the new Biosafety Level - 3 facility under construction at Technical Area 3. The building near the Materials Science Laboratory at the intersection of Diamond Drive and Pajarito Road will contain two laboratory spaces at the biosafety-3 level, a larger biosafety-2 laboratory area, offices and related storage and changing rooms. The new BSL-3 facility will enable Los Alamos scientists to fully commit to the national security mission of the Laboratory and to contribute new technological solutions to the global threat of emerging infectious diseases. The building is more than 40 percent finished and is scheduled for completion in late summer. The 3,200-square-foot facility was designed by Holmes, Narver and Raytheon. Operations at BSL-3 could begin in early 2004. More information on the BSL-3 facility can be found at http://pmweb.lanl.gov/pqm/projects/bsl-3/BSL-3_index.htm online.
