November 25, 2002

New tuition waiver program available for UC campuses Northern New Mexico high school seniors and undergraduate students can now apply for 2003 Los Alamos Employees' scholarships through the Laboratory Foundation.

The deadline to submit an application for a scholarship is Jan. 17, 2003.

The Los Alamos Employees' Scholarship Fund was created in 1997. Lab workers can donate to the fund through payroll deduction or through personal check. Forty high school seniors and college students received 2001-2002 Los Alamos Employees' Scholarship Fund scholarships last spring.

Scholarship awards are based on academic performance, leadership potential, critical thinking skills and career goals. Financial need, diversity and regional representation are integral parts of the selection process.

In addition to the Los Alamos Employees' Scholarship Fund scholarships, the University of California also has provided the foundation funding for Northern New Mexico students who are considering attending college next fall at a UC campus. The nonresident tuition waiver scholarship will give preference to high school seniors and undergraduate students who are first generation college students from low-income families.

Qualified students must apply and be accepted at one of the UC campus for the fall 2003 semester. The deadline to apply to UC for the fall 2003 semester is Nov. 30.

Los Alamos Employees' Scholarship fund awards range from four-year scholarships of $2,500 to $10,000 per year, to one-time awards of $1,000 and $2,000. In addition to these awards, Laboratory Director John Browne and his wife Marti, of Benefits and Employment Services (HR-B), established an Endowed Leadership Scholarship Fund two years ago to create lasting scholarship opportunities for Northern New Mexico students with significant financial need who have demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities and achievements in their home, school and community. These awards are one-year scholarships of $1,000.

Interested students can obtain a scholarship application by contacting Tony Fox of the Laboratory Foundation at 992-0685 in Santa Fe, or from the foundation's Web site at www.lanlfoundation.org online.

Since the scholarship fund began, 155 scholarships totaling $396,000 have been awarded to Northern New Mexico students.

The Laboratory Foundation is the not-for-profit philanthropic grant-giving entity for the Lab, supporting a range of national and community not-for-profit organizations.
