How'd you do that?

November 4, 2008

Robert Naranjo of the Bradbury Science Museum points the nozzle of a compressed air gun at a screwdriver during High-Tech Halloween last Friday at the museum.

The flying screwdriver demonstrates the effect of the Bernoulli principle, which describes how a moving fluid has lower pressure than the same fluid standing still. The moving air above the screwdriver, (from the compressed air gun) has a lower pressure than the stagnant air below the tool. The higher pressure air below provides enough upward force to balance gravity and keep the screwdriver afloat.

Nearly 1,900 children and adults came to the Bradbury Science Museum for High-Tech Halloween.
