Public can test drive or ride in hydrogen-powered vehicles Wednesday

August 19, 2008

As part of a cross-country, hydrogen-powered-vehicle road tour, members of the public will have a chance to test drive or ride in hydrogen-powered vehicles supplied by leading automotive companies from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Sandia Science and Technology Park in 10520 Research Road, Albuquerque.

A consortium of organizations that included the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Department of Transportation, the California Fuel Cell Partnership, and the National Hydrogen Association is presenting the cross-country tour. The tour is traveling from Portland, Maine, to Los Angeles, California, covering 31 cities in 18 states in 13 days.

At the tour stop in Albuquerque, Laboratory retiree and guest scientist Ken Stroh will represent the Lab. Stroh is the former manager of the Hydrogen, Fuel Cell and Transportation program at Los Alamos. In the early 1990s, he worked on a partnership between the Lab and General Motors to develop an electrochemical engine. His work in fuel-cell research earned him a medal in 1998 from the Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles, the U.S. Department of Commerce, and the Society for Automotive Engineers.

“Because Los Alamos staff members and technicians made a number of the breakthroughs enabling hydrogen fuel-cell technology, and because Los Alamos continues to lead the world in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel-cell research, I’m honored to represent the Laboratory at this event,” Stroh said.

During Wednesday’s stop, participants will have the opportunity to learn about hydrogen as a transportation fuel and drive or ride in hydrogen-powered passenger vehicles or transit buses, according to road tour organizers. The event is free.
