LOS ALAMOS, N.M., February 5, 2003 — Officials from Los Alamos National Laboratory and KSL Services Joint Venture are signing a contract formalizing KSL Services as Los Alamos' new site support services contractor.

KSL Services Joint Venture is a newly formed joint venture, which includes Kellogg Brown and Root Inc. and partners Shaw Infrastructure Inc. and Los Alamos Technical Associates Inc.

The contract signing is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Thursday in University House at Los Alamos' Technical Area 3. Interim Laboratory Director Pete Nanos, Barbara Stine, principal deputy director for the associate director of operations, Richard Marquez, associate director for administration and Gary Thurber, general manager, are scheduled to take part in Thursday's contract signing. The site support services contract is valued at about $150 million per year, carries a five-year term with an option for an additional five years and is the largest contract at the Laboratory. Services provided under the contract include facilities maintenance and repair, utility operations, waste removal, roads and grounds maintenance and custodial services.

KSL Services Joint Venture has brought in its own senior managers but retained the other employees of the former site support services contractor, Johnson Controls Northern New Mexico.

"We are excited to have KSL Services Joint Venture join the Los Alamos family and look forward to working with its senior management team and work force in providing these vital services to the Laboratory," said James Holt, Los Alamos' associate director for operations.

"KSL couldn't be happier to have been selected as the site support services subcontractor. We are excited about the opportunity to partner with Los Alamos to provide world-class facility maintenance, engineering and construction support," said Gary Thurber, KSL's general manager.

"Our goal is a true teaming arrangement with Los Alamos where we offer best commercial business practices to help the Laboratory transform itself over the next few years. We don't underestimate the difficulty of the task, but we have been gratified by the partnering offered by Dr. Nanos, Jim Holt, Tony Stanford and their staffs. The majority of our work force is 'craft' personnel and we intend to extend this partnership to the unions. We look forward to being part of the Laboratory community," Thurber said.

Los Alamos awarded the site support services contract to KSL Services Joint Venture last year. Los Alamos issued the site support services contract for competitive bid as part of an internal realignment effort and changes in the way the Laboratory approaches facility maintenance and infrastructure support.
