A small wildland fire at Technical Area 39 that started Wednesday afternoon has been contained. Los Alamos County Fire Department crews together with National Park Service, Emergency Management (EO-3), U.S. Forest Service, and Santa Clara Pueblo personnel responded to the fire.
Initial response included more than 40 fire fighters, four mini tenders, four tenders, two pumpers, and other support equipment. Additionally, as a precautionary measure, two Forest Service air tankers made two slurry drops, and a helicopter stationed at TA-49 was used during the afternoon.
Tankers and the helicopter are stationed to resume activities today if necessary. The fire has resulted in no injuries, and no structures have been damaged or were in danger of being damaged.
An environmental and health analysis was performed Wednesday evening, and no health risks were identified.
At 8 p.m. Wednesday, the fire was approximately 10 acres, fully contained and within Ancho Canyon. Los Alamos County Fire Department fire crews monitored the fire overnight and will begin mop-up activities this morning. Motorists on NM 4 near Ancho Canyon can expect to see continued activities near TA-39 for approximately two days.
The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time. The Laboratory will conduct a full inquiry into the exact cause of the fire.
