Hecker recounts recent visit to North Korea

February 28, 2008

Former director talks at Lab

Former Laboratory Director and senior Fellow Sig Hecker discussed his recent trip to North Korea during a talk this week.

Speaking to a full Materials Science Laboratory Auditorium, Hecker discussed the private trip he made earlier this month with a former State Department representative and a U.S. Senate staff member. Now a professor and co-director of the Center for International Security and Cooperation at Stanford University, Hecker spent four days in North Korea to assess compliance with a six-party agreement regarding North Korea's nuclear facilities.

Hecker told the Stanford Daily newspaper that the access his party was granted to North Korea's nuclear facilities, combined with the seriousness of the disablement actions "convince me that North Korea is prepared to permanently shut down its nuclear facilities in Yongbyon. That will mean no more bombs and no better bombs as long as they don't test again."

Hecker was Los Alamos's fifth director, leading the Laboratory from 1986 to 1997.

The talk is scheduled to be rebroadcast on LABNET Channel 10. Check the schedule for rebroadcast times.
