Area schools get new computers

February 1, 2008

Donated by IBM

Ray Johnson, left, community outreach specialist with IBM, talks with Española Valley High senior Jeremy Maestas in the computer-assisted design lab. Maestas is seated in front of one of the 30 computers IBM donated to the school.

IBM also donated fully-loaded laptop and desktop computers to San Ildefonso and Ohkay Owingeh Day schools under the auspices of the Subcontractor's Regional and Community Development Plan, which is part of the prime contract between Los Alamos National Security, LLC and the Department of Energy.

"These computers add academic and educational excellence and proficiency in computer use to our school system. It also gives our students a real, modern day tool to conduct research," said Leonard Valerio of Telecommunications, vice president of the Española Valley Public School Board, and chairman of the district's technology committee. "We didn't have that capability before; our student-to-computer ratio is about 25 to 1. We ultimately would like to have a ratio of three students to one computer. This is really important to us."

IBM is building Roadrunner, the Lab's new high-performance computer slated to become the computational cornerstone of Laboratory mission-related work. Roadrunner is designed to achieve a sustained operating speed of 1,000 trillion calculations each second.

The Community Programs Office (CPO) coordinated the visit to Española Valley High School and the pueblo schools. Community Programs manages the LANS Community Commitment Plan, which includes education outreach and economic development components.

See the December 10, 2007 Daily NewsBulletin for more information about Roadrunner.
