Public hearings scheduled on complex transformation

By Steve Sandoval

January 3, 2008

Los Alamos a preferred site

Los Alamos and New Mexico residents will have at least four opportunities to learn about and comment on a proposal to transform the nation's nuclear weapons complex. Two meetings are scheduled March 13 in Los Alamos and Santa Fe.

The meetings are part of the National Nuclear Security Administration's proposed complex transformation to a smaller, safer, more secure, and less expensive nuclear weapons complex that leverages the scientific and technical capabilities of its workforce and meets national security requirements.

As part of the proposed complex transformation, the Laboratory is NNSA's preferred alternative site for plutonium research, development, and limited manufacturing, along with nuclear weapons design and engineering, and supercomputing. Read a fact sheet on the preferred alternative.

Meetings are scheduled March 10 in Socorro and the next day in Albuquerque. Additional meetings are scheduled at 11 a.m., March 13 at the Hilltop House in Los Alamos, and at 6 that evening at the Genoveva Chavez Community Center in Santa Fe. The complete schedule of meetings nationwide is here.

"The preferred alternative selection confirms that Los Alamos is first and foremost a science R&D Laboratory," said Michael Anastasio, Laboratory director.

The Laboratory is the nation's choice for materials-centric national security science that relies on effective integration of experiments with exceptional theory, modeling, and high-performance computing. Interdisciplinary excellence in theory, modeling, and simulation with experimental science and nuclear science continue to provide the Laboratory with innovative and responsive solutions to broad national security challenges through the agile, rapid application of key science and technology strengths.
